Vasa

Greater Vasa Parrot

Coracopsis Vasa

Origin: Madagascar

Greater Vasa Parrots are charming and active birds. These birds love toys that they can manipulate. They can take things apart as fast as anyone can put them back together. Because they are so great at manipulation, they need a secure and spacious cage in order to prevent “the great escape” from the dismantled cage. They are very thoughtful and considerate of their friends and will open any other cages around. Don’t forget to provide your Vasa with a separate and portable playstand. They always want to be near you. Vasas are avid chewers and can quickly make kindling out of any wooden toy. Provide your Vasa with foraging toys and lots of wood to chew and you will have a very happy bird. Vasas will eat just about everything they are offered. There is never anything left in the bowl. They LOVE to eat.

Greater Vasa parrots are listed on Cites II as an endangered species due to the depletion of their natural habitat.

Greater Vasa parrots are unique among parrots. They have extremely long bodies with 74 (trust us on this one) shades of black to grey feathers and a horn colored beak. An interesting feature of the female breeding physiology is that her feathers turn brown without a molt. AMAZING!! The top of the female’s head becomes completely bald and the skin turns “taxicab” yellow. AND, if that isn’t strange enough, the beaks of both the male and female become about a third wider during the mating season. Hey, they’re from Madagascar after all.

There is some evidence that the Vasa is the genetic link between parrots and raptors. They are just not like any other parrot.

Vasas are beautiful in flight and can be easily flight trained.

Timothee Graze, co-owner of Parrot Toys USA, was the first breeder to raise second generation domestically bred Vasas.
