Black headed caiques--pionites melanocephala--and white bellied caiques--pionites leucogaster are South American. Caiques are the energizer bunnies of the parrot world. They need the largest cage you have room for filled with a zillion toys. Make sure your caique has safe toys; they are so active they can hang themselves in the shortest time possible. Be vigilant All that energy needs fuel; never let your caique run out of food or water. Caiques like to be handled and caressed for about 10 minutes and THEN, off to more discoveries and playtime. Two caiques can be housed together; they know how to play with each other. BUT housing two males together can lead to agressive behavior--even a visit to the vet; so be observant. If you want to be amused and like frenetic actiity, a caique is the perfect pet for you.
