Species Amazona

The Amazon parrot is native to the New World ranging from South America to Mexico and the Caribbean. Most amazons are predominantly green, with accenting colors that vary depending upon the species. Amazons range in size from the small Spectacled Amazon to the large Mealy Amazon.

Amazons are known for their exceptional vocal abilities and playfulness. Most amazons can be aggressive during their mating time. (Don’t let them on your shoulder if they’re in mating mode!!!!!! Remember the pirate with the eye patch.) All amazons require a lot of attention when kept as pets.

Since Amazons are cavity nesters in the wild, they have a strong desire to chew wood. So, they need lots of toys to destroy. For the larger Amazons, toys such as the LRG AHHH Nibbler, CHEW, or Numb Chucks are great toys to satisfy the demolition drive within. Note that rebuilding is not their strong point. THAT is your job!!!

Amazons not only have an innate desire to chew, they are also incredibly dexterous with their hands (okay feet…whatever). And so, we recommend toys like Twister with colorful moving parts and a variety of shapes, textures and sizes or Lottsa Knots for undying untying pleasure.
