Congo African Grey parrots make superb pets for those who appreciate their very sensitive and intelligent nature. To achieve full potential, these birds must have lots of stimulation and interaction.

The Congo Grey is a medium sized parrot with light grey feathers, bright red tails, and a black beak. These birds initially have grey irises which change to a pale yellow by the time the bird is a year old. African Grey parrots are considered to be excellent talkers. Unlike other parrots, wild African Greys have been documented imitating the calls of several other species.

Their sociability and intelligence can make African Grey Parrots excellent pets. These same qualities mean that African Greys require special commitment by their owners including frequent one-on-one interaction and supervised time out of their cage. They also require a roomy cage with a safe place to hide and rest. Their diet should be varied and include fresh fruit and vegetables, grains (cooked, sprouted, soaked).

Their toys should be colorful, chewable, challenging and provide an opportunity for foraging and mental stimulation. Bells are a particular favorite (get a BIG clapper).

When not provided with these things, African Greys can develop psychological problems such as a fear of leaving the cage; self-destructive behaviors such as plucking; and screaming.

Even the healthiest, happiest pet African Grey will generate a fair amount of mess and noise. Like most parrots, they are non-domesticated, and even a well-socialized, hand-raised and aviary bred bird is only one or two generations from a wild predecessor. African Greys say the darnedest things!! So have a sense of humor and watch your language!!!
